4 Reasons Why Your Cooler Isn’t Cooling

We have all been there – sweltering in the summer and the a/c isn’t working like it should be. Sound familiar? In this article we will be looking at what the problem could be and how you can fix it.

How an Air Conditioning System Works

Your a/c unit is basically a heat exchange system. It sucks in warm air from inside your house, which is passed over a cold evaporator coil. The cool air is then delivered back into your home while the heat and moisture are ejected via the condenser (which is the box you see outside the home).

Let’s look at reasons why your air conditioning unit might not be functioning as well as it should be:

Your condenser needs to be cleaned

Like all mechanical items, to work properly, your unit needs to be kept clean and well-maintained. There are a few key areas to consider in terms of a/c maintenance.

The first is that the condenser outside your home might be dirty. If this is the case, the a/c unit will have to work much harder to extract and eject heat and cool the air.

Your filter is clogged

Another important point regarding cleanliness is the air filter inside the unit. Before the air is passed over the evaporator coil, it is first filtered to remove dust and other airborne particles. This, of course, prevents build up within the unit and ensures the filtered air going back into your home is clean and free of dust. The filter can get clogged easily, so regular cleaning of the filters is advised.

Luckily, in both these cases, you don’t need to call out a professional – you can clean the condenser by wiping away dirt with a cloth and some soapy water.

The filters can be removed (carefully!) and cleaned with soapy water. Let them dry out before re-inserting them. A check every 30 days is recommended for keeping your a/c unit clean.

    There’s a refrigerant leak

A far more serious problem is when the chemical that cools the air as it passes through the air conditioning system starts leaking. If your room is not getting cold, or the a/c unit is running constantly, call in a professional.

Other signs include a chemical smell in the air and any build-up of ice on the machine. This is not a DIY job so be sure to get help!

    You need a bigger system

If all parts are still working, and the system is clean and you are still not getting that lovely cool feeling, it may be that your unit is the wrong option for your space. One size definitely does not fit all when it comes to air conditioning services!

This is a serious drain on your pocket, as it will mean replacing your system but you’ll notice the difference in your electricity bills each month so it’s worth the cost investment over time.
